Prodigal parent

Explain to me,

because I bear too small a brain

to comprehend why children beg,

or even crawl –

snakelike on a bended knee –

to appease an indifferent parent

who treats them worse than dirt,

while the one who shows the most respect,

is constantly being abused and hurt.
